Three Pakistanis were among the 16 fatalities, and nine other people were injured as a large fire tore through the fourth storey of a residential building in Dubai on Saturday.
The five-story building in the Al-Ras neighbourhood, one of the oldest areas of Dubai and a popular zone for migrant workers and traders, was completely destroyed by fire. Naseer Vatanappally, an Indian social worker, was at the Dubai Police mortuary on Saturday night to assist with victim identification. He claimed he was coordinating with Dubai Police, other diplomatic missions, and friends and family of the deceased.
“So far, we have been able to identify 4 Indians, including a couple from Kerala and two men from Tamil Nadu who worked at the building,” he said. “We have also been able to identify 3 Pakistani cousins and a Nigerian woman.”
The local news was informed by Salinga Gudu that his brother Gudu Saliyakoondu, a watchman from Tamil Nadu, India, had lost his life while attempting to save people inside the structure.
“I was extremely terrified because my brother works in that building. He said, “He went up to help and never came down.
