To address the province’s energy needs efficiently, the incumbent government has started over 20 mega electricity projects in Balochistan at a cost of Rs335 billion.
According to an official document available with APP, “there are twenty (20) mega power projects completed/ongoing during the current government, including one IPP project, fifteen (15) QESCO projects, and four (4) NTDC projects.” During the current government’s tenure, the Private Power and Infrastructure Board completed a 1,320 megawatt imported coal-based power generation plant in Hub, Balochistan (PPIB).
This project was processed by the PPIB as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which was launched on August 17, 2019. Hub Power Company (Pvt.) Limited and China Power International Holding are the project’s sponsors. A total of Rs.335, 012.6 million is spent on the 20 projects.
Under the Power Production Policy 2015, PPIB established a 1,320 MW power generation project in IPP (Independent Power Producer) mode, with a total private sector investment of $1,912 million (1$=Rs. 150=Rs. 286,800 million). The overall cost of 15 projects completed by Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) is Rs 27,700.6 million, compared to Rs 20,512 million for four projects completed by National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), for a total cost of Rs 15,621.1 million.
