240 Electric Buses to be Distributed in 24 Districts in Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister recently led a meeting with the Transport Department to check the progress of several important transport projects in the province, especially focusing on the introduction of electric buses.

During the meeting, she emphasized that remote and underdeveloped areas must be given more attention and priority. She clearly stated that the practice of providing new services only to big cities should be changed. In her words, “The culture of giving every new facility to big cities must be changed.” To follow through on this commitment, the government will send 240 electric buses to 24 underdeveloped districts in the first phase of the plan.

From August to October this year, a total of 500 electric buses will be introduced in major cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi. In the second phase, another 600 buses will be rolled out between November and December. These efforts are part of the larger Punjab Clean Air Programme, which focuses on improving air quality and reducing pollution. As part of this initiative, 400 electric buses will be operated in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Lahore.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Gujranwala Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. This major public transport project aims to improve travel for thousands of people every day. A 22-kilometer-long BRT route is being developed from Rahwali to Eminabad, and it will include 28 modern stations along the way. In addition to this, 80 feeder buses will be introduced to connect different parts of the city and nearby suburban areas with the main BRT route. These steps are aimed at making travel easier, faster, and more environmentally friendly for the people of Punjab.
