3 Facts of Masjid Nimrah in Arafat, Makkah

Masjid Nimrah, situated in the plains of Arafat, Makkah, holds significant importance as the site where the Khutbah (sermon) for Hajj is aired. This mosque carries intriguing facts worth exploring.

Parts of Masjid Nimrah are out of Arafat

To accommodate a larger congregation for salah (prayer), Masjid Nimrah underwent expansions, leading to the division of the mosque into two sections. The first unit, where the sermon is delivered, is located outside the boundaries of Arafat at Wadi Urana. The second half of the mosque, however, rests within the Arafat region.

Hajj is not Performed by staying at Masjid Nimrah

Pilgrims should be aware that staying in the front section of Masjid Nimrah, which lies beyond the Arafat boundaries, does not fulfill the obligation of Hajj. According to the rules, it is the responsibility of the pilgrims themselves to enter the plains of Arafat between midday and sunset in order to fulfill the necessary obligations of Hajj. Moreover, to provide clear guidance, signboards within Masjid Nimrah direct pilgrims to stay in the second half of the mosque or proceed towards the Arafat region after performing two prayers together.

The Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad

On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah in 10 AH, Prophet Muhammad delivered his last sermon at Wadi Urana, the same location where Masjid Nimrah stands today. This historic sermon holds profound significance and was a pivotal moment in Islamic history. Here are few of the points from the sermon.

  • The life of every Muslim is a sacred trust.
  • Indeed everyone shall meet Allah and be dealt with according to their deeds.
  • Return whatever goods to those who entrusted you.
  • Do not hold dealings that involve interest. Usury has been prohibited in Islam. One can get his capital back without earning interest on it.
  • The devil shall astray one from the right path, therefore, beware of his evils. He is hopeless for leading you towards the wrong path in major things, yet he shall plan you to fall in his evil through minor and small things.
  • Men have rights over their women, and women also have rights over their men. If they abide by your rights, then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness.
  • The five pillars of Islam were recalled. ( shahada, salat, zakat, sawm, hajj)
  • Everyone is equal, there is no racism in Islam. The only Muslim superior is the one who is more pious.
  • Every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood.
