Govt to Unveil iPhone Installment Plan for Public

The interim government has introduced a groundbreaking initiative set to begin on January 12, 2024, offering an installment plan for iPhones to the public.

Umar Saif, the Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology, disclosed details of this collaboration with telecom stakeholders, a plan initially announced in October 2023.

He highlighted the need for such a program, acknowledging that while many Pakistanis use mobile phones, the high cost of premium devices is often beyond their financial reach.

Dr. Saif emphasized the goal of this initiative, aiming to make the latest smartphone models accessible through convenient and affordable installment plans.

An interesting aspect is the inclusion of iPhones in this installment plan. To ensure compliance with payments, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will enforce the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Systems (DIRBS), potentially blocking handsets in cases of default.

Dr. Umar Saif clarified that this policy aims to promote responsible financial behavior while expanding smartphone access across different income groups.

Telecom companies will play a key role, providing smartphones directly to consumers through structured installment plans, extending mobile broadband benefits, particularly to lower-income segments.
