Got Your SIM Blocked by FBR? Here’s How to restore after filing tax returns

Recently, numerous individuals in Pakistan have found their mobile SIM cards blocked by FBR due to non-filing of income tax returns. If you have now submitted your tax return and need to reactivate your SIM, here is a guide to help you through the process.

How to Reactivate Your SIM Card

Option 1: Utilize the FBR Helpline

One efficient way to get your SIM card reactivated is to reach out to the FBR helpline. Inform the representative that you have filed your income tax return. After they verify your return, your SIM should be restored within 48 hours.

Option 2: Visit the Regional Tax Office (RTO)

If contacting the helpline does not work, another option is to go to your Regional Tax Office. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Find Your Regional Tax Office: Determine the RTO that covers your area of tax registration.
  • Report Your Return Filing: Visit the office and notify the officials that you have submitted your tax return. Request the reactivation of your SIM card.

FBR’s Criteria for SIM Reactivation

The FBR has outlined that blocked SIM cards will only be reactivated after confirmation from either the FBR itself or the Commissioner Inland Revenue responsible for your case. This confirmation is based on two key factors:

  1. Confirmation of Return Filing: Your income tax return must be verified by the relevant authorities.
  2. Exemption Verification: If you were not required to file a return because your income is below the taxable limit, you need to provide evidence to support this exemption.

Under Section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the FBR or the Commissioner Inland Revenue has the authority to restore blocked utilities, including mobile SIM cards, based on the following conditions:

  • Filed Return Confirmation: The relevant authorities need to confirm that your income tax return has been filed.
  • Proof of Non-Taxable Income: If your income falls below the taxable limit and you are exempt from filing a return, you must provide documentation to prove this.

If your SIM card has been blocked by the FBR, you can follow one of two methods to reactivate it. First, contact the FBR helpline for a quick verification process. If that does not resolve the issue, visit your Regional Tax Office to report your return filing in person. By meeting the necessary requirements, you can ensure your SIM card is reactivated and continue to use your mobile services without further disruption.
