KP Earns Record Rs. 250 Million by Selling Markhor Trophy Hunting Permits

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reached a significant achievement by earning Rs250 million from the sale of just four markhor hunting permits. According to the Wildlife Department, two permits for the Toshi 1 and Toshi 2 regions received the highest bids, with an expected revenue of over Rs150 million from hunting two markhors in these areas. In addition, a permit for one markhor in Kohistan is projected to generate Rs53.7 million, while another in Gahrit, Chitral, is expected to bring in Rs52.8 million.

This trophy-hunting initiative is not only boosting the local economy but also plays a key role in preserving biodiversity. The program allows only older male markhors to be hunted, which helps protect the younger population and maintain the species. By turning wildlife into an economic asset, local communities are motivated to actively engage in conservation efforts.

An impressive 80% of the income from these hunting permits is directed towards community development and wildlife conservation projects. This ensures that local communities benefit from the program while also helping to protect the environment and wildlife for future generations.

The success of this initiative demonstrates how careful and sustainable hunting practices can both support economic growth and contribute to the preservation of endangered species like the markhor, Pakistan’s national animal.
