Portugal to Issue New Work Visas Within 30 Days

Portugal has announced plans to simplify its work visa process, aiming to approve applications within 30 days. This initiative, led by António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, seeks to address mounting delays and the country’s urgent labor shortages.

The current visa system has faced heavy criticism for prolonged processing times, with some applicants waiting up to six months. These delays have created challenges for immigrants, especially those from Brazil and Schengen countries, who are eager to contribute to Portugal’s workforce.

To streamline the process, the government plans to improve consular efficiency by hiring 50 additional staff and upgrading the capabilities of the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA). The goal is to ensure faster visa decisions and support the country’s economic growth.

Portugal’s labor market needs at least 50,000 international workers annually, with sectors like construction requiring as many as 80,000 workers. Business leaders have warned that continued delays could harm the economy and stall critical development projects.

If you’re planning to work in Portugal, you’ll need to fulfill specific requirements and follow a structured application process. Below are the key steps and documents you’ll need to get started:

Requirements for Portugal Work Visa

  1. Visa Application Form: Complete and sign the official visa application form.
  2. Photographs: Provide two recent passport-sized photographs.
  3. Passport Copy: Ensure your passport has at least three months of validity remaining and submit a photocopy.
  4. Job Contract: Present a valid employment contract detailing your job position and salary.
  5. Proof of Accommodation: Submit evidence of your living arrangements in Portugal, such as a rental agreement or receipt.

Tracking Your Application

Once your application is submitted, you can monitor its progress through Portugal’s official visa partner, VFS Global. Here’s how:

  • Complete the captcha verification.
  • Your application status will appear on the screen.

This streamlined process makes it easier for Pakistani applicants to secure a Portugal work visa and explore opportunities in sectors facing labor shortages.

The government’s efforts underline the importance of immigrant workers in driving Portugal’s economy forward. While the initiative marks a step in the right direction, its success will depend on overcoming operational hurdles to ensure timely visa processing.
