Punjab Provincial Ministers’ Salaries Increased from Rs. 100,000 to Rs 960,000 After Bill Approval

The Punjab Assembly has approved a bill increasing the salaries of provincial ministers, Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), and other officials.

Under the Punjab Revision of Salaries of Public Representatives Bill 2024, provincial ministers’ salaries have been raised from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 960,000 per month. MPAs will now receive Rs. 400,000, compared to their previous pay of Rs. 76,000. The speaker’s salary has also increased significantly, from Rs. 125,000 to Rs. 950,000.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Critics argue that such a large increase is inappropriate, especially during tough economic times. Some have questioned the legality of the bill, expressing concern over the use of public funds for such substantial pay raises.

On the other hand, government officials have defended the move, stating that it will provide lawmakers with financial stability and enable them to better focus on their duties.

Supporters believe the pay hike reflects the growing responsibilities of public representatives and ensures they are compensated fairly for their work. However, many see the decision as a controversial step, raising questions about priorities in addressing the broader challenges faced by the public.

This significant increase in salaries has fueled debates about the need for fiscal discipline versus fair compensation for lawmakers.
