Microsoft has officially closed its office in Pakistan as part of a wider global restructuring plan. The move resulted in the layoff of five employees but does not mark the end of Microsoft’s presence in the country.
Instead of operating directly from within Pakistan, Microsoft will now manage its services through regional hubs and authorized local partners. The company stated that this change is aimed at improving efficiency and aligning with its broader focus on advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services.
A Microsoft spokesperson explained that the decision is part of global efforts to streamline operations and shift focus toward strategic priorities. This includes moving away from traditional software models and embracing cloud-based services such as Software as a Service (SaaS).
This office closure is just one part of a larger wave of job cuts across Microsoft. The company recently announced that around 9,000 jobs about 4% of its global workforce will be eliminated. These layoffs follow a previous round in May, where 6,000 employees were let go.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of IT and Telecom, this move reflects a worldwide shift in the tech sector. Companies are transitioning from local setups to more flexible, digital-first models that rely heavily on regional operations and cloud-based systems.
Despite shutting down its local office, Microsoft has reassured its users in Pakistan that services and support will continue through regional teams and partner networks. The company remains committed to serving the Pakistani market, just through a different and more modern approach.
