Pakistan Pays Tribute to Philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi on his 9th Death Anniversary

Today marks the 9th death anniversary of Abdul Sattar Edhi, one of Pakistan’s most respected and loved humanitarians. Born on February 28, 1928, in Gujarat (then part of British India), Edhi dedicated his entire life to helping those in need.

In 1951, he began his mission of service with a small clinic in Karachi. Over the years, his work grew into one of the largest and most trusted welfare organizations in Pakistan — the Edhi Foundation. Without seeking fame or wealth, Edhi worked day and night to support the poor, sick, abandoned, and helpless.

His services included running orphanages, free hospitals, ambulance services, shelters for the homeless, and even homes for animals. He also offered humanitarian aid beyond Pakistan’s borders during international disasters. His famous quote, “No religion is higher than humanity,” reflected the values he lived by.

People from all walks of life respected him for his honesty, simplicity, and deep compassion. He never wore fancy clothes, refused government positions and awards, and always kept the focus on serving others.

Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away on July 8, 2016, in Karachi, at the age of 88. His death was mourned across the world, and he was given a state funeral — a rare honor for a social worker.

Even today, his legacy continues through the Edhi Foundation, which remains active and committed to helping people, just as he would have wanted.
