Pakistan, Iran Aim for $10 Billion Trade Target

Pakistan and Iran are moving closer to finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and opening more border markets to increase trade between the two countries.

Both governments have set a goal of boosting bilateral trade to $10 billion in the coming years.During a recent visit to Iran, Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan held discussions with Iranian officials on ways to expand trade.

Talks focused on improving infrastructure at border points, developing barter trade systems, and ensuring smoother processes for traders on both sides.

At present, trade between the two neighbors is around $3 billion. Pakistan’s main exports to Iran include rice and meat, which continue to see rising demand. Officials from both countries agreed that greater cooperation in transport and logistics could help expand the range of goods being traded.

Alongside trade, the two sides also highlighted the importance of building stronger cultural and social ties. People-to-people exchanges, tourism, and business partnerships were discussed as key tools to strengthen relations.

Improved connectivity through better border facilities is also expected to play a major role in deepening cooperation.

To push these initiatives forward, the Joint Economic Commission of Pakistan and Iran is expected to meet soon. The commission will address existing trade barriers, encourage private sector participation, and outline new policies to support long-term growth.

Both Pakistan and Iran view the FTA as an important step towards unlocking the full potential of their economic partnership. If successful, the agreement could open new opportunities for businesses and bring mutual benefits to the people of both nations.
