Heavy Fines Announced for Driving Without License in Karachi

Inspector General (IG) Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has announced heavy fines for people driving without a valid license in Karachi.

Speaking at a ceremony, the IG said that authorities had earlier considered setting fines as high as Rs100,000. However, the Sindh government directed the police not to impose such a large amount.

Under the new schedule:

  • Motorcyclists without a license will be fined Rs20,000
  • Car drivers will be fined Rs30,000
  • Heavy vehicle drivers will be fined Rs50,000

The IG also shared that about 300,000 people in Karachi have already obtained online driving licenses. He stressed that improving the city’s licensing system is key for better traffic management in the long run.

E-Challan System Coming Soon

Karachi’s traffic police are preparing to introduce an e-challan system where fines will be issued automatically with the help of digital evidence like photos and videos. Under this “faceless system,” challans will be sent directly to the violator’s home through post, and details will also be available on the official mobile app.

To prepare citizens, the traffic police have launched the second phase of an awareness campaign. The campaign includes outdoor advertisements at more than 100 locations across Karachi, such as streamers, signboards, and other displays with messages about traffic rules and safety. Videos and images are also being shared to educate the public.

Purpose of the Initiative

The traffic police explained that these steps are part of a broader effort to make citizens follow traffic laws and reduce violations. By increasing awareness and introducing automated fines, the authorities aim to improve road safety and bring discipline to Karachi’s roads.

Citizens have been urged to strictly follow traffic laws to avoid penalties and unnecessary trouble.
