Pakistan-Iran-Turkey Train to Resume From Dec 31

The government has announced plans to restart the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul (ITI) freight train service by December 31, 2025. This decision comes after resolving key trade, administrative and logistical challenges that had halted the service since 2022.

Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the revival of the ITI freight train will play a vital role in boosting regional trade and strengthening economic ties between Pakistan, Iran and TĂĽrkiye.

The train is expected to provide a faster and more cost-effective route for transporting goods, helping businesses in all three countries.

In addition to the ITI train, Pakistan also plans to establish a new rail link with Kazakhstan through Chaman under a recently signed agreement. This expansion aims to improve regional connectivity and open new trade corridors between Central and South Asia.

Abbasi also shared updates on other key railway projects. The rehabilitation of the Rohri–Karachi railway track will begin in July 2026 with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This project will improve safety, speed, and reliability on one of Pakistan’s busiest railway routes.

Meanwhile, the upgraded Shalimar Express service is set to resume operations on November 7, offering improved comfort and better facilities for passengers traveling between Karachi and Lahore.

The minister added that Pakistan Railways has earned Rs. 4.5 billion through its cargo operations, reflecting positive progress in the organization’s financial performance.

The government hopes these new steps will bring efficiency, strengthen trade, and restore public confidence in the national railway system.
