6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turkey

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck western Turkey on October 28, 2025, causing panic across several cities.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake was centered in Sindirgi, located in the Balikesir province, at a shallow depth of just under six kilometers.

The tremors were felt across major cities including Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, shaking buildings and prompting thousands to rush outdoors.

Officials reported that three previously damaged structures and a two-story shop collapsed during the quake. Fortunately, there were no deaths, but at least 22 people were injured, mostly due to panic and falls while trying to escape buildings.

Rescue and emergency teams were immediately deployed to the affected areas. Local authorities opened mosques, schools, and sports halls to provide temporary shelter for residents who were afraid to return to their homes. Many people spent the night outdoors as aftershocks continued to be felt across the region.

Sindirgi had previously been hit by a similar 6.1-magnitude earthquake in August, raising concerns about the area’s seismic vulnerability. Experts have urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety protocols as more aftershocks could occur in the coming days.

Expressing solidarity, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar extended heartfelt condolences to the Turkish government and people.

He offered Pakistan’s support for relief and recovery efforts, reaffirming the strong bond between the two nations. The Turkish authorities continue to assess the damage while ensuring all affected citizens receive immediate assistance.
