The Government of Pakistan has made it easier for citizens to get their first CNIC by announcing that all residents aged 18 and above can now obtain it free of cost.
This new step aims to make the registration process more inclusive and accessible for everyone, especially young adults who are applying for the first time.
To apply, eligible citizens can visit any nearby NADRA center, fill out the required form, and complete a short verification process. Once the application is submitted, the CNIC will be issued within 15 days.
By removing the application fee, the government hopes to eliminate financial hurdles that often prevent people from obtaining their identity cards on time.
Having a CNIC is essential in Pakistan, as it allows citizens to open bank accounts, buy mobile SIMs, apply for passports, benefit from government welfare programs, and register to vote in elections.
This free CNIC initiative ensures that every adult has equal access to these services and can participate fully in the country’s economic and civic life.
However, while the first CNIC is completely free, NADRA has also introduced revised fees for card renewals and Smart NICs. Applicants can now choose between normal, urgent, and executive processing options depending on how quickly they need their cards.
Through this initiative, the government is promoting digital inclusion, simplifying citizen services, and encouraging more people to formalize their national identity a key step toward better governance and public access to essential facilities.
