OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teachers, a free AI tool designed specifically for K–12 educators. This initiative gives verified school staff access to the service at no cost until June 2027.
The platform is built to support teachers in creating lesson plans, assignments, and other educational materials while offering a safe space to explore AI applications in the classroom.
The teacher-focused version includes features from the standard ChatGPT, such as GPT-5.1 Auto, file uploads, image generation, memory tools, and app integrations. However, it is tailored for schools, ensuring compliance with FERPA regulations to protect student data.
Educators can also collaborate by sharing chats with colleagues, making it easier to exchange lesson ideas and teaching resources.
OpenAI’s move comes as part of its broader effort to expand into the education sector. By offering a dedicated, secure AI assistant for teachers, the company hopes to help schools adopt new technologies and improve teaching efficiency.
Early reports suggest the tool can save teachers significant time in planning, enable more personalized learning for students, and support creative classroom activities.
With this launch, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as not just a general AI assistant but also a practical tool for educational professionals, helping teachers integrate AI into their daily workflows while maintaining safety and privacy standards.
This initiative could transform how schools approach lesson planning and student engagement in the coming years.
