China has donated 58 solar-powered street lights to Karachi, in what officials described as a small but practical boost to the city’s public safety and local infrastructure.
The lights were handed over at a ceremony in Clifton organised by the Chinese Consulate General. Consul General Yang Yundong and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab attended the event.
Yang said the project reflected the “all-weather” and “ironclad” Pakistan-China partnership and was part of Beijing’s push to support community-level development. He said China would continue working with Karachi on similar “small yet smart” livelihood initiatives.
Wahab said the lights had already improved night-time mobility for residents and signalled the city’s willingness to expand cooperation with China, including under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
The donation is the latest in a series of targeted development efforts by China in Pakistan’s largest city.
