Sindh provincial government has announced a major expansion of environmentally friendly public transport in Karachi, placing China-made electric vehicles at the centre of the province’s strategy to modernise urban mobility and reduce pollution in Pakistan’s largest city.
Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, revealed plans to induct additional Chinese-manufactured electric buses into Karachi’s transport fleet on Friday afternoon while also introducing more double-decker buses to meet growing commuter demand.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting of the provincial transport department held at his office, attended by senior officials including Transport Secretary Asad Zamin and Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto.
Officials said the expansion of China-produced electric buses reflects Pakistan’s increasing adoption of clean transport technologies developed through cooperation with China, which has emerged as a global leader in electric mobility solutions.
