Power Shift! PM Calls for Nationwide Shift to Electric Vehicles

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a nationwide shift to electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce heavy dependence on imported fuel and ease pressure on Pakistan’s foreign reserves.

He made these remarks while addressing a ceremony in Islamabad on Monday for handing over eco-friendly electric vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Territory Traffic Police.

The Prime Minister handed over the first batch of 15 electric vehicles (BYD Atto 2 and Sealion 7 models) to the traffic police. These modern EVs can travel 350 to 400 km on a single charge and will significantly cut monthly fuel costs. Officials say the cost of each vehicle can be recovered within 13 to 14 months through fuel savings alone.

PM Shehbaz Sharif stressed that such environment-friendly initiatives should be followed by all law enforcement agencies and provincial governments. He highlighted rising global oil prices and the current regional situation as strong reasons to adopt EVs quickly. Another batch of 15 electric vehicles is already being procured by the Ministry of Interior.

The move is expected to save valuable foreign exchange, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable transport across the country.

The Prime Minister urged provinces to introduce similar green initiatives in their fleets to support economic stability and a cleaner environment.
