US Shut Down Consulate in Peshawar

The United States has announced a phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar, Pakistan. All diplomatic work for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province will now move to the US Embassy in Islamabad. The US Department of State made this announcement on May 5, 2026.

The main reasons for the closure are the safety of American diplomats and the better use of resources. Peshawar is located in a sensitive area near the Afghan border, where security threats remain high. The region has seen militant attacks and tensions in recent years. By moving operations to Islamabad, the US aims to protect its staff while saving money around $7.5 million per year, according to earlier reports.

Peshawar’s consulate was historically very important. It served as America’s closest diplomatic post to Afghanistan. It played a big role in logistics and operations before, during, and after the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan. It employed 18 American staff and 89 local workers.

Despite the closure, the US says its priorities in Pakistan have not changed. It will continue to support economic cooperation, regional security, and strong bilateral ties. Engagement with people and officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now happen from Islamabad. The US will keep its consulates in Karachi and Lahore open.

This decision comes at a time of changing global priorities and cost-cutting efforts under the current US administration. Some experts worry it may reduce on-ground understanding of the northwest region. However, the State Department believes the embassy in Islamabad can handle all responsibilities effectively.
