From Scenic Spot to Pollution Hotspot! Rawal Lake Clean-Up Uncovers Disturbing Waste

Islamabad’s beautiful Rawal Lake has turned into a worrying pollution hotspot. During a clean-up drive on Thursday, the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) found large amounts of dangerous waste along its shores.

Volunteers and officials collected used syringes, hospital waste, and huge quantities of plastic debris. The drive was held in collaboration with Nestlé Pakistan and other partners to mark World Environment Day 2026. It aimed to highlight the growing threat to the lake’s ecosystem and public health.

Rawal Lake is a vital water reservoir that supplies drinking water to Islamabad and Rawalpindi. It is also a popular recreational spot. However, years of improper waste disposal have badly polluted it. The discovery of medical waste is especially alarming as it can spread diseases and harm wildlife.

Pak-EPA officials warned that such pollution needs urgent and continuous action. They urged citizens, especially the youth, to stop littering and join regular clean-up efforts. Proper disposal of hospital and plastic waste is necessary to protect this important natural resource.

This clean-up drive served as a strong reminder that everyone must work together to save Rawal Lake before the damage becomes irreversible. Sustained efforts and public awareness are key to restoring its natural beauty and safety.
