Pakistan has 25.1 Million Out-of-School Children, Second Highest Globally: UNICEF

Pakistan continues to face a major education challenge, with around 25.1 million children between the ages of 5 and 16 currently out of school, according to UNICEF.

This means millions of children across the country are missing out on the opportunity to receive a basic education.

The report highlights significant differences between regions and genders. Punjab and Sindh have the largest number of out-of-school children due to their large populations.

However, Balochistan has the highest percentage of children who are not attending school, making it one of the most affected provinces in the country.

UNICEF noted that low public investment in education remains a major obstacle to progress. A large portion of education budgets is spent on teacher salaries, leaving limited funds available for improving school buildings, learning materials, classroom facilities, and other essential resources. As a result, many schools struggle to provide a quality learning environment for students.

The report also points to challenges such as poverty, lack of access to schools, and social barriers that continue to prevent many children, especially girls, from completing their education.

To help address these issues, UNICEF is supporting several initiatives across Pakistan. These efforts focus on expanding early childhood education, providing alternative learning opportunities for children who are out of school, and strengthening partnerships between schools and local communities.

The goal is to increase school enrolment, reduce dropout rates, and improve learning outcomes for children throughout the country. UNICEF believes that greater investment and stronger education policies can help ensure that every child in Pakistan has access to quality education and a better future.
