Punjab Launches First E-Bike Battery Swapping Station

Punjab has taken another step toward cleaner urban transport with the launch of a battery swapping system for electric bikes. The initiative is part of the province’s wider efforts to promote electric mobility, reduce air pollution, and provide more convenient transport options for residents.

The battery swapping model allows e-bike users to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one instead of waiting for the vehicle to charge. This can reduce downtime and make electric bikes more practical for people who use them for daily travel. Battery swapping is especially useful for shared and high-use electric vehicles, where long charging times can affect availability.

The initiative is linked to Punjab’s Green Mobility Programme, which includes a major e-bike sharing plan for Lahore. The programme is expected to introduce 50,000 electric bikes in phases, supported by 1,500 smart docking stations across the city. The first phase includes 10,000 e-bikes, with the system using mobile technology, GPS tracking, and battery swapping to improve access and reduce charging delays.

The move is also expected to reduce fuel use and transport-related emissions. With Punjab expanding electric buses, e-taxis, e-bikes, and electric three-wheelers, battery swapping could become an important part of the province’s growing electric transport network.
