Goods transporters have temporarily called off their nine-day nationwide strike after reaching an understanding with the federal and Sindh governments on several key concerns affecting the transport sector.
The decision comes after government representatives assured transporters that their major demands would be reviewed and addressed through the relevant authorities.
Among the commitments are a review of toll tax rates, mechanisms for revising petroleum prices every 15 days or on a monthly basis, measures to address parking-related challenges, and consideration of suitable weight limits for 10-wheeler trucks.
The developments provide temporary relief to businesses, industries and consumers who were facing disruptions in the movement of goods across the country. The strike had raised concerns about supply chains, transportation costs and the availability of essential commodities in different markets.
However, transporters have made it clear that the nine-day strike has not been permanently called off. Instead, it has been postponed for 40 days, giving the government time to work on the commitments made during negotiations.
Transport representatives have also warned that they could resume nationwide protests if the agreed measures are not implemented within the promised timeframe. They are expected to monitor progress on issues including toll charges, fuel pricing, parking facilities and permissible vehicle weight limits.
The temporary suspension is therefore being viewed as an opportunity for both sides to resolve the outstanding issues through negotiations rather than allowing another prolonged disruption to the country’s transportation and supply network.
