Hutchison Ports Pakistan has announced a $76 million investment plan to upgrade its deep-water container terminal in Karachi during 2026 and 2027. The terminal, known as South Asia Pakistan Terminal, is Pakistan’s first deep-water container facility and is designed to handle large container ships.
The planned investment will add two electric remote-controlled quay cranes, 17 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes, 70 electric trucks, and 50 trailers. The company has already received 20 electric trucks, 10 trailers, a reach stacker, and an empty handler this year.
The upgrade is expected to improve cargo handling, speed up vessel turnaround, and support more efficient port operations. Hutchison Ports also said the use of electric equipment will help reduce emissions and support cleaner supply chains.
Hutchison Ports Pakistan CEO CS Kim said the company is working with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Karachi Port Trust, and the government to strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional transshipment hub. The company has also submitted a proposal for additional land to develop a Centralized Examination Area, which could improve cargo inspection and clearance.
The latest investment will increase Hutchison Ports Pakistan’s total investment in the country to more than $690 million by the end of 2026.
