The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has placed several northern areas of Pakistan on alert as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over the next 72 hours.
Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could experience strong winds and intense rain, creating dangerous conditions in vulnerable areas. The weather may cause water levels to rise in rivers, streams and nullahs, increasing the possibility of flash floods and landslides.
Urban areas may also face flooding if heavy rainfall continues. Gilgit, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, Swat, Chitral and Mansehra are among the districts identified as being at higher risk.
The NDMA has instructed relevant authorities to maintain close monitoring and keep emergency teams and resources ready to respond if conditions worsen.
Residents in affected areas have been advised to stay away from rivers, streams and other waterways during heavy rain. People living in low-lying locations have also been urged to remain cautious and follow official safety instructions.
Tourists travelling through the affected regions have been advised to avoid unnecessary journeys, particularly during severe weather. Authorities have stressed the importance of taking precautions as sudden flooding and landslides can occur with little warning.
The alert is intended to help communities and local administrations prepare in advance and reduce the potential impact of extreme weather.
