Pakistan’s telecom regulator has imposed fines totaling Rs. 3.41 billion on mobile network operators over the past four years for violations involving service quality, network coverage and other regulatory requirements.
During the same period, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued 86 show-cause notices and 20 warning letters to telecom companies as part of its efforts to address complaints and improve the overall quality of telecommunications services across the country.
The regulatory action is aimed at ensuring that mobile operators maintain reliable networks and meet required service standards. However, representatives from the telecom industry have raised concerns that not all service disruptions are within the control of operators.
They pointed to instances of internet and mobile service suspensions carried out in response to government or security directives. Industry stakeholders have called for a regulatory framework that takes such circumstances into account, particularly considering the financial losses faced by telecom companies and the impact of prolonged service disruptions on consumers.
