The Lahore High Court has imposed a Rs. 100,000 fine on a woman who filed a contempt petition against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and other officials.
The order was issued on Wednesday, September 16, during a hearing before LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum. The petitioner, Ashba Kamran, appeared before the court herself. According to reports, the court said the petition was unnecessary and questioned the incorrect case number provided by the petitioner.
During the hearing, Kamran questioned whether constitutional provisions and Supreme Court orders applied equally to government officials and ordinary citizens. She also alleged that authorities had not followed certain directions contained in a Supreme Court order.
The chief justice asked her to provide the number of the main case connected with her contempt application. The petitioner gave a number that the court found to be incorrect and could not satisfactorily explain the error.
The court said the mistake had consumed judicial time and ordered her to pay the fine before the matter could proceed. The petition names CM Maryam Nawaz, Punjab Chief Secretary and Punjab Assembly Speaker among the respondents.
