The University of Management and Technology (UMT) has announced the launch of its School of Artificial Intelligence (SAI), marking a significant step in Pakistan’s journey toward becoming a leader in artificial intelligence education, research and innovation.
Rooted in the ideology Intelligence for a Better Tomorrow, the School of Artificial Intelligence is founded on a simple but powerful belief: technology serves it true purpose when it improves lives.
The journey toward SAI began in 2019 with the establishment of the Department of Artificial Intelligence at UMT. As AI continues to reshape industries, economies and societies, the growing scale and importance of the field has led to the evolution of the department into a dedicated school.
SAI is designed to go beyond teaching AI as a technical discipline. It aims to empower students, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry to harness artificial intelligence for human progress, national development and the betterment of society.
The school will bring together education, research, innovation and industry engagement to develop the knowledge and talent needed for an increasingly AI-driven world. Its focus will extend from emerging AI technologies and advanced research to practical applications that address real challenges faced by people, organizations and communities.
Through its academic programs, research initiatives, innovation ecosystem and partnerships, SAI aims to contribute to the development of a generation of professionals who can not only build intelligent technologies, but also understand their wider implications and apply them responsibly.
The launch reflects UMT’s commitment to preparing Pakistan for the future of work, industry and society, while creating an environment where AI can become a force for positive and inclusive change. Chairman and President UMT Ibrahim Hasan Murad said:
“This is a step to match the scale and pace at which AI is transforming our world. At UMT, we believe universities must not simply respond to technological change; they must help shape it. SAI brings together education, research and innovation to prepare a generation that can lead confidently in an AI-driven future while keeping human progress at its centre,” he added.
SAI founding Dean Dr Atif Alvi said:
“The school builds on a strong foundation of inquiry, discovery and innovation that has been cultivated at UMT over many years. Our ambition is not only to develop expertise in AI, but to create an environment where ideas can become solutions and research can translate into meaningful impact. By connecting AI with real human and societal needs, we hope to contribute to both national development and a better future for all.”
