Punjab has taken another step toward bringing artificial intelligence into the education system by launching a province-wide training programme for teachers. The initiative is designed to help educators develop the skills required to introduce AI concepts in classrooms and support students as technology becomes a larger part of their education.
The programme will train more than 160,000 teachers across Punjab. Officials say the training will focus not only on understanding artificial intelligence but also on using modern digital tools to improve classroom teaching and respond to students’ changing learning needs.
The move follows the provincial government’s plan to include AI in the school curriculum. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently approved the new curriculum and directed that artificial intelligence be included from Classes 1 to 12. The plan also includes establishing AI laboratories and strengthening digital learning at the school level.
The curriculum is expected to introduce students to areas such as digital skills, computational thinking, robotics, data science, machine learning and responsible use of AI. Earlier curriculum work by the Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority also placed emphasis on creativity, problem-solving and ethical digital citizenship.
The teacher-training component is being implemented through collaboration between the School Education Department, PECTAA, PMIU-PESRP, UNICEF and the Office of AI. The government says preparing teachers is an important part of ensuring that the new curriculum can be delivered effectively in schools across the province.
The initiative is expected to give students greater exposure to emerging technologies while helping schools adapt their teaching methods to the changing demands of the digital economy.
