The deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 ends today, September 30, with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) confirming that no further extension has been granted. The FBR has also warned taxpayers against relying on fake notices about an extension.
Under the current schedule, individuals and associations of persons (AOPs) are required to file their returns by September 30. Companies generally have a December 31 deadline, while companies with a special tax year have a September 30 deadline.
FBR sources said the late filer category will be removed from October 1. Those who file after the deadline could face higher penalties and restrictions linked to non-filer status. According to the sources, the penalties will increase as follows:
| Taxpayer | Current penalty | Reported new penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | Rs1,000 | Rs25,000 |
| AOP | Rs10,000 | Rs50,000 |
| Company | Rs20,000 | Rs100,000 |
The FBR has advised taxpayers to submit their returns through its IRIS system and provide complete and accurate information. Commercial banks have also been directed to remain open until 10 pm today to facilitate tax payments.
