Elon Musk Sparks Fresh Debate by Saying Instagram Is ‘For Girls’

Elon Musk has sparked a fresh debate over gender stereotypes after again describing Instagram as a platform “for girls.” The Tesla and SpaceX chief remarked on October 1, 2026, while responding to an X post from Geiger Capital, which said it had deleted its Instagram account and called the platform an “inherently female app.” Musk replied simply, “Instagram is for girls.”

The comment quickly attracted mixed reactions on X. Some users agreed with Musk, while others argued that Instagram is used by people of all genders and questioned the idea of linking social media platforms to gender.

This isn’t the first time Musk has made the same claim. In May, he also described Instagram as being for girls during an online discussion about social media habits. His comments at the time drew criticism, particularly after he made a separate joke about adult men sharing their Instagram profiles with him.

Musk’s latest comment also comes amid his long-running rivalry with Meta, Instagram’s parent company.
