Pakistan is commemorating 21 years since the devastating October 8, 2005 earthquake, one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history. The powerful earthquake left a lasting impact on thousands of families and communities across the region.
Measuring 7.6 in magnitude, the earthquake severely affected parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), claiming more than 85,000 lives and destroying homes, schools, hospitals and entire communities.
Around 53% of AJK was affected, while essential infrastructure, including water supply systems, sanitation facilities and communication networks, suffered extensive damage.
More than two decades later, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts continue in several affected areas.
While significant progress has been made, a number of projects remain incomplete. Authorities estimate that nearly Rs. 44 billion is still required to complete the remaining reconstruction work in AJK.
October 8 continues to serve as a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives, while also highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure and continued support for communities recovering from major natural disasters.
