A deadly school building collapse in Dir Colony, Peshawar, has raised serious questions about building safety and the condition of educational facilities. According to the initial investigation, students at Al-Khair Education System had reportedly informed the school principal that their classroom was shaking before the roof collapsed.
The tragedy on Thursday claimed at least 35 lives, including 33 children and two teachers, while another 52 people sustained injuries.
The First Information Report (FIR) states that the school building was in poor condition. It also highlights allegations that low-quality construction materials were used and that concerns about weakening walls and roofs had not been properly addressed.
Preliminary investigation findings indicate that construction work was taking place on a proposed veranda on the third floor when the building collapsed. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine what led to the structure’s failure and whether safety requirements were ignored.
Police have arrested the school owner and registered a case against other individuals believed to be responsible. Further investigation is expected to establish the extent of responsibility for the incident.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the importance of regular building inspections and strict enforcement of construction standards, particularly in schools where children and teachers spend much of their day.
The reported warnings from students have also raised concerns about how complaints regarding unsafe classrooms are handled. Ensuring that school buildings remain structurally sound and that reported hazards receive immediate attention is essential to protecting students and staff.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the collapse and the alleged failures that may have contributed to the loss of lives.
