Karachi may strengthen its urban development efforts by learning from Shanghai’s experience in modern city planning, following a proposal by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to establish a sister-city partnership between the two cities.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Murad Ali Shah and the mayor of Shanghai. The Chinese city’s mayor welcomed the idea, and both sides agreed to explore greater cooperation in trade, economic development and technology.
The proposed partnership aims to create opportunities for Karachi to benefit from Shanghai’s experience in managing urban growth and introducing technology-based solutions for city services. The exchange of knowledge and expertise could help identify practical approaches to improving public transport, digital services and other aspects of urban management.
As one of Pakistan’s largest urban centres, Karachi faces several challenges related to transportation, infrastructure and public service delivery. Cooperation with an international city experienced in smart urban planning could provide useful insights into addressing these issues.
The discussions also highlight the importance of city-level collaboration in strengthening Pakistan-China relations. Beyond trade and investment, partnerships between major cities can support the sharing of technical knowledge, development strategies and innovative practices.
If implemented, the proposed arrangement could provide a platform for officials from Karachi and Shanghai to exchange ideas, explore joint initiatives and learn from each other’s experiences in urban development.
The initiative reflects an effort to explore international cooperation as a way to support more efficient city management and improve the quality of public services for Karachi’s residents. Further details about the partnership and its implementation have not yet been provided.
