More than 1.87 million Pakistanis went abroad for employment over the past three years, according to figures presented in the National Assembly on October 16, 2026. The data includes professionals from several fields, raising concerns about the loss of skilled workers.
According to official documents, 45,830 highly educated Pakistanis moved abroad in 2024. The number stood at 28,726 in 2025, while another 15,850 had left by the time the 2026 figures were reported.
Doctors, engineers, IT specialists, teachers, nurses and other professionals were among those seeking jobs overseas.
The figures also showed that 3,795 doctors went abroad in 2025, compared with 3,625 in 2024. Meanwhile, 5,945 engineers secured overseas employment in 2025.
The trend highlights the need for better career opportunities, competitive salaries and improved working conditions in Pakistan. While overseas employment brings foreign income through remittances, the continued departure of skilled professionals may create challenges for important sectors, including healthcare, education and technology.
