For the first time, a pair of lungs destined for an organ transplant surgery were flown between two hospitals by drone.
At the end of September, the donor lungs travelled 1.5 kilometres in 6 minutes between two Toronto hospitals in the city centre.
According to CBC, the lucky recipient is Alan Hodak, a 63-year-old engineer and drone enthusiast who has been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis since 2019.
The University Health Network hospitals and Unither Bioélectronique, a Québec-based firm that specialises in both manufacturing organs suitable for human transplantation and speedy and efficient delivery techniques such as drones, collaborated on the drone flight.
