Prime Minister Imran Khan remarked on Sunday that the Covid-induced lockdowns have caused an “extraordinary” rise in commodity prices around the world, but Pakistan has fared “relatively much better.”
Despite a record spike in the pricing of vital products, the premier published a YouTube video prepared by a government spokeswoman claiming that Pakistan’s economic statistics were positive despite the high inflation.
Muzzamil Aslam, the finance minister’s spokeswoman, argued in the video that people criticising the economy’s collapse had nothing relevant to say.
He admitted that the cost of basic necessities had risen to record levels, but said this was due to a global increase in costs.
According to the spokeswoman, economic indicators are trending upward. According to Aslam, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported in its report a 3.9 percent increase in food inflation from September to October.
