The number of active taxpayers has dropped by 30%, or 935,000, to just under 2.2 million, according to the latest Active Taxpayers List published by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Monday.
The 2.2 million tax return filers represent just one-third of those who have legitimate National Tax Numbers (NTNs) and are doing business in Pakistan but have yet to file their tax returns, demonstrating the FBR’s inability to implement laws.
It means that two out of every three people with a valid NTN who run a company failed to file their annual income tax returns.
As per the list published by the FBR on Monday, the names of 2.178 million individuals and businesses have been included in the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) 2021 for tax year 2020.
The ATL 2021 has replaced the ATL 2020, which included the names of 3.12 million people and businesses. A comparison of the two lists revealed that the new list was missing over 932,000 names.
