Unprecedented Details: What is in Between the Stars? Well it’s Not Empty

The interstellar medium, which is the term for the dust and gas that fills the immense space between the Milky Way’s billions of stars, is not entirely empty (ISM).

Chinese researchers uncovered previously unrevealed information about the Galactic interstellar medium using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST).

The results are the most sensitive for detecting neutral hydrogen gas clouds to date, displaying unheard-before details about the distribution of neutral hydrogen gas, even though the detailed calibration is still in progress.

The study team has also identified diffusely ionized plasma of unknown origin and brilliant patches ionised by bright stars.
