Pakistan Approves up to 124% Increase in Gas Tariff Due to IMF’s Demand

The Cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has authorized a nationwide increase in gas prices of up to 124 percent for a period of six months.

Prior to obtaining a staff-level agreement with Pakistan on the renewal of the loan program, the Pakistani government took this decision in accordance with the requirements stipulated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division presented tariff proposals for all consumer categories in accordance with the Review of Estimated Revenue Requirement (RERR) for the fiscal year 2022–2023 and laid out a summary of natural gas sale pricing for FY2023 on the table, according to the finance ministry.

“Gas price revision proposal for home, commercial, and power sectors for six months [January to June, 2023] was approved by the ECC following thorough debate,”
