Elections on the Same Day, Hearing of the Case in the Supreme Court Scheduled Tomorrow

According to Aaj News on Thursday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has scheduled the hearing of the issue involving the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections for tomorrow (Friday) at 11:30 am.

The top court also made public the whole order of the hearing from April 27, stating that its ruling from April 4 regarding the Punjab election on May 14 remained unchanged.

The change occurs a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) asked the Supreme Court to review its decision to hold elections in Punjab on May 14 in a petition.

According to Section 58 of the Elections Act of 2017, the commission said that modifying the election schedule was the ECP’s sole responsibility.

Later that day, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) submitted a civil miscellaneous appeal (CMA) to the top court, pleading with it to uphold its directive to hold the elections in Punjab on May 14.

The PTI requested in its application that elections be held in Punjab on May 14 and provided a report on the discussions it had with the government regarding the election’s schedule.

In their application, the party told the high court that, “in spite of [the parties’] best efforts,” the government and PTI were unable to agree on a solution regarding the dates of the Punjab Assembly elections within the confines of the Constitution.

The former ruling party argued that the top court’s directive that the Punjab Assembly elections take place on May 14 be “implemented in letter and spirit so that the Constitution is upheld and does not stand violated” should be followed.
