According to Malik Amin Aslam, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change, the area covered by mangroves has increased by 300 percent in the country since 1990, rising from 477 square kilometers to 1463 square kilometers.
He stated in a video message that Pakistan is the only country in the world with such a large mangrove output. “The Indus delta in Sindh contains 95 percent of the country’s mangrove forests,” he said.
He said that the Sindh government, in partnership with international organizations, was instrumental in increasing the country’s mangroves. He stated that as part of the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Project, the federal government would plant one billion mangroves.
He said that mangrove forests are one of the most active habitats on the planet, as they can help combat climate change, serve as natural fortresses against soil erosion, and defend against tsunamis and cyclones.
