Scientists Develop Loudspeakers That Generate Pure Silence by Absorbing Sound

Scientists at EPFL have created an advanced device called the “plasmacoustic metalayer” that outperforms traditional methods of reducing noise. This device uses plasma to control sound waves more quickly and effectively than traditional membrane-based tools.

The plasma transducer is compact but highly efficient. It can absorb 100% of incoming sound intensity without reflecting any back. This means it effectively eliminates noise rather than just reducing it.

What’s truly remarkable is that the plasma layer required to cancel out audible sound at 20 Hz is only 17 mm thick. In comparison, other noise reduction techniques typically need much thicker materials. This groundbreaking innovation has the potential to revolutionize the way we address noise problems.
