Bharat Benz and Reliance Industries have jointly introduced India’s first luxury bus powered by a Hydrogen Fuel Cell. This eco friendly inter-city coach concept was showcased at the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial in Goa. The bus uses a customized Bharat Benz chassis, which represents a significant advancement in sustainable transportation.
The bus aims to meet inter-city commuting needs and explore the potential of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion for future travel. Furthermore, it offers a range of about 400 km. However, the main objective is to assess the practicality of using Hydrogen Fuel Cell as an alternative propulsion method.
Nevertheless, the concept of Hydrogen fuel cell technology is relatively new in India’s mobility sector, with some prior attempts to introduce it. However, in October 2022, Japanese car manufacturer Toyota unveiled India’s first Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). Currently, trials are underway to explore the use of hydrogen as a clean mobility solution.
Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Transportation Ecosystem
Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd and the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) are working together on a Pilot Project. The project focuses on studying and evaluating the Toyota Mirai. It is the world’s most advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) running on hydrogen. Moreover, it raises awareness about Green Hydrogen and FCEV technology and aims to establish a Green Hydrogen ecosystem in India.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, using hydrogen, are considered Zero Emission solutions as they emit only water vapor. With these initiatives, India is taking significant steps towards a cleaner and greener future. Moreover, collaborative efforts between automobile manufacturers and energy companies are important in promoting clean transportation solutions.
