Rare Super Blue Moon to Illuminate the Sky this Week

Skywatchers around the world are in for a treat this week as a unique celestial event unfolds. A dazzling full moon will grace the night sky with its presence, and it carries some rare characteristics that make it even more special.

This forthcoming moonrise will showcase a “blue moon,” which signifies the second full moon occurring within a single month – a relatively infrequent occurrence. To make this event even rarer, it will be a blue super moon, denoting a full moon that appears closer to Earth than usual.

The phenomenon of a super blue moon transpires when a second super moon graces the skies within one month. The most recent appearance of a super blue moon was witnessed on January 31, 2018, and the next occurrence is slated for January 31, 2037.

Scheduled to illuminate the night on August 30th at 9:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, this super moon marks the third of four consecutive super moons in 2023. Expect it to shine larger and more brilliantly than any other full moon this year.

In Pakistan, the spectacle will be no less captivating. The super blue moon’s radiance will grace the Pakistani night sky, offering a mesmerizing view for all who turn their gaze upward.

Accompanying this remarkable moonrise is another celestial marvel – Saturn. Positioned about 5 degrees from the moon in the southeastern sky, Saturn is now in opposition, aligning perfectly between Earth and the Sun. This alignment grants Saturn heightened visibility, allowing it to shine with captivating radiance.

While Saturn can be observed with the naked eye, employing binoculars or a telescope will enhance your ability to discern some of the planet’s distinctive features.

Full super moons are distinguished by their increased luminosity, shining approximately 16% brighter than regular full moons, and often appearing larger due to their unique positioning in the sky.
