UK’s Global Talent Visa! Documents, Fee, Procedure and eligibility to get settled in the UK

For many, the United Kingdom stands as a beacon of opportunity, drawing thousands from their native lands in pursuit of better employment prospects. The UK offers various visa options for those seeking to settle there, and one such option is the Global Talent Visa.

Understanding the Global Talent Visa:

The Global Talent Visa is a pathway to work in the UK designed for individuals who are recognized leaders or show the potential to lead in fields like academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology.

Eligibility Requirements:

The fundamental eligibility criterion is that the applicant must be at least 18 years old. Beyond this, one can apply for a Global Talent Visa by either obtaining an endorsement or winning an eligible award. In various fields like architecture, awards like the Pritzker Prize or Royal Gold Medal make one eligible for this visa. For digital technology, receiving the ACM Prize in Computing or Turing Award qualifies.

The UK government maintains a list of recognized awards for each field, ensuring that applicants meet the criteria.

If an endorsement is required, it can be obtained through an eligible job offer, individual fellowship, research grant approved by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), or an eligible award, depending on the field of expertise.

How to Apply :

To obtain a Global Talent Visa, you must apply for an endorsement to prove your leadership or potential leadership in your field. The Home Office reviews endorsement applications through a UK endorsing body specializing in your area.

The timeframe for an endorsement decision varies, with a “fast track” process taking about 2 weeks for eligible academic or research positions and 5 weeks for peer-reviewed applications.

You can apply for endorsement and the visa concurrently, but remember that the earliest you can apply for a visa is 3 months before your intended travel date.

For those in academia or research, eligibility extends to leaders or potential leaders in science, medicine, engineering, humanities, and social sciences, with similar sub-categories for other fields like digital technology and arts and culture.

What the Global Talent Visa Allows:

This visa offers flexibility in choosing its duration, up to 5 years. Visa holders can work as employees, be self-employed, or serve as company directors. Changing or leaving your job doesn’t require notifying the Home Office, and you can bring your eligible partner and children with you as ‘dependants’. You are also free to travel abroad and return to the UK.

Notably, there are no language or minimum salary requirements. The visa can be renewed indefinitely, provided you meet the extension criteria.

After living in the UK for 3 years and fulfilling other eligibility requirements, you can apply for permanent settlement, also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’. Time spent outside the UK for research also counts towards this period.

Documents Required:

To apply for the visa, you need a valid passport or identity document, tuberculosis test results (if applicable), and written permission if you’ve received an award or scholarship to study in the UK in the past year. If your documents are not in English or Welsh, certified translations are necessary. A blank page in your passport is also required for the visa sticker.

For applicants with eligible awards, the Home Office may verify your win through publicly available information, such as award organization websites. You only need to provide evidence if they cannot find this information.

You can apply for a Global Talent Visa online, submitting the required documents. Some applicants may also apply at a visa application center, depending on their country of residence.

If you’re already in the UK, you and your family may be able to extend your Global Talent Visa or switch to this category. To prove your identity, you’ll provide biometric information at a visa application center or use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app.

You can contact UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to make changes to your application or request a refund if the application has not been processed yet.

Applying for Partners and Children:

Your partner and children can also apply to join or stay with you in the UK as ‘dependants’, provided they are eligible. Their visas usually expire on the same date as yours. They should apply online, and you’ll need to provide evidence of your relationship.

For partners, proof of civil partnership, marriage, or living together for at least 2 years is required. Each person applying must pay a £716 application fee and healthcare surcharge. Biometric information (fingerprints and photos) must also be provided, but there’s no fee for this.

Limitations of the Global Talent Visa:

Holders of this visa cannot apply for most public funds or the State Pension, and they are not allowed to work as sportspersons.

Visa Fees:

The total visa fee is £716. For endorsement-based applications, £524 is paid when applying for the endorsement, and £192 when applying for the visa. If applying based on an eligible award, the full £716 is paid. Each person, including partners and children, must pay £716.

The healthcare surcharge is an additional cost, usually £624 per year per person, subject to variations based on age and other factors.

Processing Time:

The decision on your visa application typically takes 3 weeks if you are outside the UK and 8 weeks if you are already inside the UK. Expedited decisions may be available for a fee.

In summary, the Global Talent Visa opens doors to individuals who demonstrate leadership or potential leadership in specific fields. By meeting the criteria and providing the necessary documents, you can embark on a journey to work and settle in the UK, making the most of the opportunities it offers.
