The Abbottabad women’s police station has reactivated 20 years after it was granted a record to lodge the first information report (FIR) and a daily diary in situations of abuse and crimes against women. Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto inaugurated the police station 28 years ago, but it has remained dysfunctional since 2002.
“The women police station has been made functional. A lady assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Fahmeeda Bibi has been assigned the charge of station house officer as no female inspector and sub-inspector was available. A female head constable is also posted muharer along with all the support staff including the wireless operator from ladies police,” District Police Officer (DPO) of Abbottabad Sajjad Khan told The News.
In the next few years, the KP Police intends to increase the proportion of female cops to at least 10%. Ayesha Gul, a senior female police officer, was recently appointed as AIG Gender Equality. While Sonia Shamroz, a district police officer, commands the force in rural Chitral.
The capital city police announced the launch of a Gender Protection Unit by elevating the women’s police station. The purpose is to provide a more public-friendly working atmosphere and improve operational skills. According to reports, the new section would have a helpline and a female police officer trained in victim care. It was supposed to be linked to the Social Welfare Department’s 15 helplines and BOLO helpline.
