Afghan Taxi Drivers Build Handmade Air Coolers to Beat Extreme Heat

In Kandahar, Afghanistan, where the summer heat can go above 40°C (104°F), local taxi drivers have come up with a smart and creative way to keep their cars cool. Since regular air conditioning systems often stop working properly in such extreme temperatures, the drivers decided to make their own air coolers using simple materials.

These homemade air coolers are built using barrels and exhaust pipes, which are attached to the roofs of their taxis. According to Gul Muhammad, one of the taxi drivers, the coolers are very effective. They spread cool air throughout the vehicle, making the ride much more comfortable for both the driver and the passengers. The best part is that these coolers only need to be filled with water twice a day to keep working.

This clever solution is now getting attention from international media. It shows how local people, even without access to advanced technology, can find smart and useful ways to deal with difficult weather. The efforts of Kandahar’s taxi drivers highlight their resilience and ability to adapt to the challenges brought on by climate change and rising temperatures.
